Launch event drives IPv6 traffic to all-time high

The much-hyped World IPv6 Launch Day event on Wednesday resulted in a rise in IPv6 traffic -- including Web and email -- to a new peak as expected. But ISPs said the bigger story was the steady increase in IPv6 traffic that occurred in the months leading up to the event, which they anticipate will continue for the rest of 2012.

Coordinated by the Internet Society, World IPv6 Launch Day was a kick-off event for more than 50 access network providers such as AT&T, Comcast and Time Warner Cable and 3,000 websites -- including Facebook, Google, Yahoo and Bing -- to begin permanently supporting IPv6 for their customers.

VMware vSphere 5.0 gets Common Criteria security clearance

VMware today said its virtual-machine infrastructure software, vSphere 5.0, has achieved certification under what's known as the Common Criteria program, a U.S.-supported international effort to test software in labs for security and general soundness in technical features.

Gmail outage likely hit several million on Thursday

Google's Gmail webmail service was unavailable for more than 90 minutes on Thursday, an outage that may have affected almost 4.8 million users.

Google first acknowledged the problem around 11 a.m. U.S. Eastern Time, and declared it resolved at 12:40 p.m., saying it had affected "less than" 1.38 percent of the Google Mail user base.
